The West Finchley Neighbourhood is renowned for the its varied Greenspaces - from the Dollis Valley Greenwalk and Finchley Way Open Space to allotments and the Tennis Club.
The Dollis Valley Greenwalk is a 10-mile walk linking green spaces along the Dollis Valley, starting in Moat Mount, Mill Hill through Barnet and into Hampstead Heath.
The route can take up to 6 hours to walk and is mostly flat with hard surfaces making it suitable for walkers, runners and wheelchair users - though weather can make parts of the walk muddy or icy. Some sections of the walk have signs where cyclists are allowed.
Riverside Park (the stretch behind Chesterfield Road and Westbury Road) includes an open space for picnics, a children’s playground, an all-weather football/ basketball/netball court.
Meanwhile, Dollis Brook (behind Brent Way) provides habitats for many plants and creatures. Keep a good look-out for kingfishers and herons which can be seen in the area!
Nestled between Nether Street, Finchley Way, Penstemon Close and Hamilton Way this open space of greenfield and wooded area was left to the people of Finchley in the will of Augustus Cooper in 1939.
The site consists of distinct areas known as The Green Field, The Copse and The Orchard.
The Friends of Finchley Way Open Space works with Barnet Council to maintain and enhance this green space.
There are two allotment sites in the neighbourhood - Nethercourt Avenue and Brent Way
The Area is notable for a range of trees, including along streets, within the Dollis Valley Greenwalk, the Finchley Way Open Sapce, in residential gardens and along Lovers Walk. These are mostly mature or semi-mature, comprise a range of species and are mainly in good health.
In 2017 local residents carried out an audit of the trees on the streets of the neighbourhood. You can read a brief report here or the full audit here.
